Carol Geddes (Teslin Tlingit First Nation)

 

Born in Teslin, Yukon, Carol Geddes graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa with a B.A. and obtained a graduate degree in Communications from Concordia University in Montreal. After being involved with Aboriginal politics as Executive Assistant to the Council For Yukon First Nations Grand Chief, she entered the media field. Her first major film Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief, won an award at the Educational Documentary Festival in San Francisco and set her on an award-winning career in the industry. Since then, Geddes has produced twenty-five documentary films.

Whether writing or producing, her prolific output has highlighted the stories and struggles of Aboriginal life in both the Yukon and other parts of Canada while garnering her national and international awards for documentaries. Picturing A People: George Johnston, Tlingit Photographer won an Outstanding Achievement Award at Dreamspeakers Festival, received a Gemini nomination, and won a People's Choice Award at the Great North Film Festival.

Geddes' most recent film is Two Winters: Tales From Above the Earth, a live action animation telling of a true event in northern life. This film has gone on to win nine national and international awards, including Best of Festival at Nextfest. The film has been widely broadcast throughout the world.

Her current production is a six-part series on the lives of Tlingit people on the northwest coast during the Russian occupation of that area. Broadcast is slated for November, 2007.

In 2002, Geddes was awarded a Queen's Jubilee Medal in recognition of her contribution to the Canadian cultural community.
